Fall Semester 2006:

Linguistics 10

Introduction to Language

TTh 2:00-3:15

A general education course in Humanities Area C2, this course provides a general overview of the linguist’s perspective on language, as well as the history of this perspective in Western thought.  Materials are the two books Landmarks in Linguistic Thought by Harris & Taylor, and Linguistics: A Very Short Introduction by P. H. Matthews (2003).  In these books lurks great enlightenment, and the answers to various mysteries of life.  Actually, language is still very mysterious today, but these books allow us to get a cross-generational look at how philosophers and linguists have come to various important conclusions about language over the 2500 years since Plato.
