Originally developed Donald E. Knuth and introduced into the mainstream (or some semblance of it) by Lamport’s guide, TEX is a type-setting tool that helps prepare a plethora of different document types with relative ease. There are plenty of implementations of this original system for different operating systems. MiKTEX is one such implementation for Windows.

Here is a very interesting article critiquing Word Processors. Most of the packages available for TEX are posted at this general repository, Comprehensive TEX Archive Network. Most of these packages come with very good tutorials.

As in the case with any software tool or for that matter any new concept, one continuously learns new things every day. I post some tidbits on LATEX that have helped me in the past here.
