Background Information

PLANTS Database USDA "Provides standardized information about the vascular plants, mosses, liverworts, hornworts, and lichens of the U.S. and its territories." · PLANTS Image Gallery   "Emphasizes photos and line drawings of U.S. plants but also contains many cultivated or foreign taxa." CalFlora "Provides access to habitat descriptions, photographs, observations, nomenclature, distribution maps, and other data on California's wild plants, Calflora is .. the online gateway to information about California’s wild plants." CalPhotos A collection of 142,633 images of plants, animals, fossils, people, and landscapes. Select type of photo (fungi, plant-tree, plant-fern, etc), search on scientific or common name, and a variety of other criteria. Google Images Lots of images, but depending on the source, these may or may not be authoritatively identified. Encyclopedia of applied plant sciences. 2003. Finding Books

How to Request Books and Journals Stored Off-Campus Most books and all bound journals are stored off-campus. You can request specific items be delivered to the library via the library catalog. Library Catalog Search the library catalog to find books, journals, and other material in the Madden Library. Keyword Searching (to search some "key" words in the title, author, and/or subjects)     for example:   price supports and dairy Use * for alternate word endings:     e.g., root* retrieves root, roots, rooted, etc. Use the pull-down menu to specify subjects, titles or authors. To search for Fresno State theses: search by keyword for: thesis fresno [word from department name] e.g.,   thesis fresno plant

Finding Articles & Book Chapters

The library might have the articles and books you find through these indexes that are not full-text: Journal Articles     · Follow the Madden ArticleLink that appears in the full record describing the article.     · If Madden ArticleLink doesn't find it, check the title of the journal in the library catalog. Books & Other Resources     · Check the book title in the library catalog If it isn't in the catalog, follow the LinkPlus to request it from another library.     · If the library and LinkPlus doesn't have it, request the item via our Interlibrary Loan service.

Google Scholar Peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations. 1. Click on Scholar Preferences 2. Type fresno in the Library Links box. 3. Select California State University, Fresno - Article Link: Full Text. 4. Click on Save Preferences. Scirus.com Science Specific Search Engine In the Advanced Search you can restrict your results by type of resource and subject (Agricultural and Biological Sciences) Argricultural Research Service U.S. Department of Agriculture Find out about current research projects. Current Research Information System USDA The the U.S. Department of Agriculture's documentation and reporting system for ongoing and recently completed research and education projects in agriculture, food and nutrition, and forestry. Science.gov A unified search of the government’s vast stores of scientific and technical information., Science.gov allows users to search the surface web as well as the deep web, where traditional search engines cannot go. Science.gov is an interagency initiative of 16 U.S. government science organizations within 12 Federal agencies.
