The Virtual Walk 2000

Join the group of Sy Mack, Bud Stude, Bruce Blackerby, and Jack McDermott as they take the traditional Walk. Your digital photographer, Dave Zellmer, will appear in the last picture. This Walk took place on May 10, 2000, and honors the 40th anniversary year of The Walk.

The pictures below read from left to right. Click on the thumbnail images to see the larger version, then use your browser Back button to return.

The Walk begins with a discussion of world events in the lunch room at University Center. Visible in this picture (left to right) are Sy Mack, Bud Stude, Bruce Blackerby, Jack McDermott, and Don Albright.

Today Don Albright joined us for the discussion. He and Jack McDermott are engaged in a serious exchange. Don didn't join us for The Walk, however.

A special feature in this view is the Hat Chair. Nobody may sit in the Hat Chair. We once even told the Associate Provost he could not sit in the Hat Chair. He had to go get his own chair.

The Walk begins as we head toward the Henry Madden Library and the Peace Garden.

Here is a panorama of the Peace Garden.

Several statues grace the Peace Garden. This one is of Ghandi.

As we reach the South Gym, we turn North past the athletics complex.

Heading North, we can see the North Gym in the background.

As we approach The Turn, there is generally a Bon Mot available from one of the walking members. Your photographer was too far away to hear what it was today.

This is The Turn itself. The Walk continues between Engineering on the left and Social Sciences on the right.

Note the dumpster on the left. Any remaining items from lunch are deposited here using a two-step process. The second step is to pick it up and put it in.

As we approach the Mall, we decide on the temperature. Today (May 10, 2000) is cool and breezy, so we take the Under 100 F Route.

The Over 100 F Route is in the shade of San Ramon 2, a temporary building in place since the middle 1970's.

The Mall was created by taking out an existing street. More of these conversions are planned for the future.

At the end of the Mall we pass between Agriculture on the right and San Ramon 6 (also known as Gigliotti Hall) on the left.

With the Downing Planetarium ahead of us, and the Satellite Student Union in the distance to the right, we turn to the South.

We stopped for a moment to see Bud, Jack, Sy and Bruce. Behind them is the Downing Planetarium.

We are now heading South toward the Crossing. We check our watches to see if time remains to do the whole walk, or if we have to bail out to get to a class.

Here is the decision point. The Crossing. In the background we see Thomas Administration.

These flagpoles have a special meaning to a member of The Walk not with us today. Professor Stanley Ziegler, who was a baseball jock in his undergraduate days, shows his prowess as a pitcher by hitting each flagpole with a seed-pod gleaned from a bush near the last turn.

We now approach the Music Building. Many wonders await us.

First we appreciate the fine sculpture and flowers in front of the Music Building.

Next we get a small concert from a music student.

We also enjoy the shade on very hot days.

As we turn to the west we often discuss the state of the trees on The Walk. Our expert botanist, Howard Latimer, was out of town today.

The trees on this stretch along Keats avenue seem quite healthy today.

This is the turn past the parking lot, as we head back toward the center of campus.

Here at the parking lot, some of our emeritus professors sometimes have to bail out so they can drive to their next activity.

We can see the center of campus in the background.

We are now passing the University Restaurant. It is right around the corner from the Lunch Room. We have almost come full circle now.

The Walk continues past the Fountain, heading toward the Kennel Bookstore just visible on the left.

There are flower gardens all over our campus. These are in front of the Bookstore.

A turn at Thomas Administration puts us on the final portion of The Walk.

This is the Home Stretch. The Crossing and the Tree await us.

Here we take the other leg of The Crossing. Check the map if you have gotten lost.

The final turn by the Satellite Student Union takes us to The Tree.

At The Tree we have our final discussions of the day.

Thanks to Bud Stude who took this final shot, including your photographer Dave Zellmer on the left. Jack, Sy, and Bruce you have already met. After the discussion we return to our various duties.
