Chemistry 3A Lab Policies

  1. Grading
  2. Your lab grade from this semester accounts for a significant portion of the overall grade in the chemistry course (the exact percentage will be determined by the lecture instructor). The laboratory provides an opportunity for the student to perform experimental chemistry and to relate experimental observations to fundamental principals of chemistry. The laboratory is designed to teach the concepts and techniques of an experimental science. The experiments will also provide significant support for lecture concepts. LABORATORY ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY since an experiment must be performed to be properly understood. TWO ABSENCES (not made up) are the maximum allowed. A third (not made up) absence will result in an F for the lab and lecture portions of the course. It is the student's responsibility to make up lab absences by contacting another lab TA and arranging to sit in on their section and performing the work the same week the absence was incurred. This make up option is contingent upon there being enough space in the desired make up section. The lab instructor must sign and date all work performed in the make up section. This sort of make up is limited to a maximum of two times during a semester.

  3. Base Credit
  4. Base credit is given when the student has completed the required sections of an experiment or study guide to the satisfaction of the instructor. If you leave lab before being granted base credit you will receive no credit for that days work. A no credit grade will be counted just like an absence and upon earning three no credit scores an F will be assigned for the entire course.

All reports, Pre-labs, and Study Guides are subject to the grading of the lab instructor, at their discretion. Please work with your instructor and fellow students to ensure that you understand the conceptual basis of the lab, and that all report calculations, questions and problems are answered correctly. The content of lab quizzes will be based upon the items just discussed.

  5. Pre-labs
  6. Pre-lab assignments are to be completed before the lab is scheduled to begin. If a student fails to complete the Pre-lab before lab begins a score of zero will be assigned. After receiving a zero the Pre-lab will need to be completed before lab work can begin on that day. If the Pre-lab is not completed base credit will not be assigned.

  7. Arriving late to lab
  8. Do not arrive late to lab. Tardiness is disruptive to the class and disrespectful to the instructor. Upon your third late entrance you will be directed to meet with the lab coordinator (Dr. Dormedy). The consequences will affect your grade in the lab.

  9. Safety glasses
  10. Wear your safety glasses in lab whenever anyone is performing an experiment in the same room as you. Sanctions will be imposed on your grade if you ignore this basic safety rule. These could include dismissal from lab, and failing the course.

  11. Attendance
  12. Attendance is taken at the time that base credit is granted, after which time you may leave. The third absence will result in an F for lab and the course.

  13. Academic dishonesty
  14. No form of cheating will be tolerated. Anyone suspected of cheating will be held accountable to the University Policy (copies are available from the instructor or the department office) and be given at least an F for the assignment and risks stronger penalties including expulsion from the university. Situations where cheating is suspected will be reported to the dean. It is not my responsibility to determine guilt or innocence, just to report situations. Do not allow yourself to be found in these situations and there will not be a problem.

  15. Students with disabilities

If you have any condition, permanent or temporary, that could hinder you from participating fully in class, please see the instructor or the office of Services for Students with Disabilities, L1049.
