Chemistry 3A - Introductory General Chemistry

This site was all hand-coded in html back in the late 1990's, and formatted for a 640 pixel monitor, which gives it its rather retro look. Some pages use the now-discouraged use of frames. Tables are used throughout to organize the pages. Today new web sites are done using the University Standard CSS styles, but this one is left in its original form.

I owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Kimberly Lawler-Sagarin, who was the real Internet pioneer in the Chemistry Department at Fresno State. She created the first web pages on her Unix server which supported her computational chemistry research and was my guru as I learned html coding. Kimberly is now at Elmhurst College in Illinois.

The content was based on a textbook by Peters and Cracolice. I corresponded with Cracolice as the site was made, and had his blessings for my efforts. He used it with his classes as well.

Back then, electronic projection was not available in many classrooms. Copies of pages sometimes had to be printed onto overhead transparencies for lecture use. PowerPoint was still mostly mind-numbing bullet lists. HTML gave me more flexibility with images and animations, plus students could go to computer labs and see this cool new technology on-line! I still sometimes refer students to this site for a refresher on general chemistry.
