Welcome to the homepage for Sociology 175,
Sociological Research Methods.

This course is one of the core requirements for the major in Sociology.
The only prerequisite is Sociology 25, Quantitative Methods.

The course begins with an overview of the research process. This section includes a discussion of concepts, propositions, hypotheses, theory, and ethics.

We also discuss theory development and theory testing including a discussion of inductive and deductive approaches.

The rest of the course focuses on the four major components of any research design: measurement, sampling, data collection, and data analysis.

There is a section of this website for each of these five major parts of the course. Each section includes a brief introduction, the Powerpoint slides which provide an outline of the class discussion, a list of key terms, and review questions.

There is a list of web links which you will find useful.

There is also a section on the research paper which includes the assignments, a list of variables for the General Social Survey, a discussion of the literature review, and a list of web links.
