For purposes of this section, Police refers to uniformed patrol officers. Non-uniformed, i.e. investigative positions are discussed in a separate section on Criminal Investigation.
The term "Police Officer," and in some states the more broad term of "Peace Officer," describes hundreds of different positions at the federal, state, and local level. Some "police officers" are limited in both their geographic jurisdiction and/or enforcement authority. Municipal and County Police Officers have what is usually called "general enforcement" powers, meaning that they may investigate or respond to any violation of state and local laws/ordinances. County Sheriffs (deputy sheriffs) usually have general enforcement powers in the Central, Southern and Western United States, but in some states on the East Coast, some sheriff's departments do not perform general law enforcement duties. Their primary role is the serving of civil process and other court papers and/or responsibility for the jail and court security. State Police, but not Highway Patrol, also have broad enforcement responsibilities in geographic areas not covered by other agencies, such as municipal and county police, or county sheriffs. The primary duty of Highway Patrols is more narrow, and usually focuses on law violations involving state highways.
There are a number of federal "police officers" under a multitude of separate federal agencies, but their jurisdiction is confined to the enforcement of federal laws on federal property. Such officers could be part of the Federal Protective Service (more focused on physical security of government installations/buildings), or even the FBI, which has its own "police officers."
The information and links below focus more on state/local police or peace officers, but the basic background and educational requirements also apply to federal police officers. The only exception is the "citizenship requirement" which applies in ALL federal government positions here in the United States. There are, however, some uniformed guard type positions not requiring U.S. citizenship, at American military installations around the world. The US military also employs some foreign nationals in investigative positions at various military installations abroad.
