Most states have minimum entry standards for peace/police officers.
Individual jurisdictions not only require their applicants to meet
such standards, but often also exceed those standards by
having more stringent entry requirements.

Felonies and crimes involving "moral turpitude" generally disqualify an applicant from peace officer employment. This includes the ability to participate in "Collegiate Officer" programs, such as in Oklahoma, where college coursework is integrated with state mandated peace officer training, and students are certified as meeting the minimum peace officer training standards upon graduation. Similar programs exist in Texas, and California has police training academies for qualified applicants who pay for their own training and then solicit employment from interested law enforcement agencies in the state.
