CRIM 108
(CRIM ELECTIVE-FIRST SEMESTER; INTERNSHIP UNITS-SECOND SEMESTER)

OPEN TO QUALIFIED STUDENTS WHO ARE BEGINNING THEIR JUNIOR YEAR IN FALL OF ANY YEAR.

This is NOT the regular criminology internship and CRIM108 is NOT required to graduate; You will only receive crim elective units for the completion of the first semester of CRIM108. Internship units will only be given for the second semester of CRIM108.

If you are simply interested in completing your internship requirement you should sign up for CRIM 180/181 or CRIM 182, depending on your option. The regular internship allows you some flexibility and agencies are usually willing to work out a schedule that does not conflict with your school schedule and other personal commitments.

Meeting and Training Times in CRIM108 are not negotiable and are fixed. There are no makeups

Law Enforcement Agency Requirements and Background Screening

CRIM 108 consists of two full semesters of more than 600 hours of peace officer training which meets the training requirements of P.O.S.T., the California Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission. A regular internship requires 120 hours over one semester.

Students enrolled in or registered for CRIM108 must meet the minimum standards for peace officers set by POST, or they will be disqualified and cannot remain enrolled in CRIM108. Classroom hours exceed 10 hours per week and students allowed to continue the program to its end are expected to spend at least 10-15 hours per week of training at various facilities of the Fresno County Sheriff's Office. If you are already employed full time and also a full time students, this program is not for you.

1. Students cannot complete the program if they are not physically fit. Rigorous physical exercise is required for the duration of the program and persons who are overweight or in otherwise poor health may not be able to pass the required physical agility screening. If you are not sure of your weight situation, stand on a scale and check for overweight or obesity using the BMI. The BMI, while it has its flaws, is still the best measure:
http://www.ivillage.com/beyond-bmi
(makes accommodations for body shape and gender)
http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/obesity/BMI/bmicalc.htm (simple height/weight ratio)

2. Students missing scheduled training hours are likely to be dismissed from the program, in which case they will receive a failing grade.

3. Students must complete a lengthy personal history/background statement and all information will be verified by a background investigation.

4. Additional screening includes a physical and psychological exam, and also a polygraph exam to verify information listed in the personal history statement and to determine if any significant information was omitted from the application. Intentional omissions will result in being dismissed from the program and a failing grade for the semester.

5. The personal history statement will ask for all prior contact with law enforcement, which must be reported, to include traffic tickets, all arrests, whether convicted or not, and the polygraph exam will determine any criminal activity not recorded by police. That means if you have committed any felony or lower level criminal offenses that reflect poor judgment and dishonesty which were not reported to police, you are also not eligible for the program.

6. Students on probation for any criminal offense and students with prior convictions for criminal offenses will be disqualified from joining the program.

7. Students with restraining orders filed against them are not eligible for CRIM108.

8. At fault traffic accidents, a poor credit history, and conduct problems at prior places of employment can result in being dismissed from the CRIM108 program before the end of the first semester.

9. Students interested in completing two semesters of CRIM108 should have a GPA of at least 2.5 and improve that GPA in subsequent semesters.

10. Any arrests during the semester in which a student is enrolled in CRIM108 must be reported and can result in dismissal from the program.

Below is an initial screening questionnaire to ensure that you are at least minimally qualified to undergo further screening for participation in CRIM108.

If you have engaged in questionable or criminal conduct, you may not be qualified to join CRIM108. More detailed information on whether a particulara behavior or isssuee will exclude you from consideration can be obtained from Dr. Schweizer (haralds@csufresno.edu).

NOTE: You do not have a right to remain in CRIM108 once or if it is determined that you do not meet the California POST standards and/or the background requirements of the Fresno County Sheriff's Office. If you decide that CRIM108 is not for you, you do not have to explain your reasons. You can simply drop the class and then during your senior year enroll in the CRIM180 internship required of all students. If you wait beyond the drop date before withdrawing, you will receive a NO CREDIT for the course.

Your name, SSN and driver's license number will be checked for any criminal history by the Fresno County Sheriff's Office. If these initial checks do not result in any problems, you will be able to start the CRIM108 program in fall. The retention in the program, however, is contingent on other checks or screening processes listed elsewhere on this page.

YOU MUST REVIEW AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONNAIRE BELOW AND EMAIL ALL INFORMATION TO DR. SCHWEIZER. IF YOU FEEL THIS COURSE IS NOT SUITABLE FOR YOU, YOU SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO REGISTER FOR IT.

If you have some problems with the questions asked below and feel you have special circumstances, you should confer with Dr. Schweizer to determine if you could still qualify. If you wait until the course begins, it will be too late.

Even if you review the questions and feel you qualify without problems, this is not a guarantee of acceptance into the CRIM108 program. These questions are simply part of a preliminary screening to determine if, based on your perception, you meet the qualifications and personal background required by the State of California and the Fresno County Sheriff's Office.

Students accepted for further consideration by the Fresno County Sheriff's Office MUST undergo a thorough background investigation, which includes a polygraph exam, interviews of current and former relatives, friends, current and former acquaintances, employers, teachers, and a check of all criminal, civil, court and police records, along with an evaluation of any past medical and psychological treatment, and other areas depending on the background of the student applicant.

The background investigation and screening required for this internship may not be completed until the mid-point or later of the second semester of CRIM108. . If at that point it is determined that you were untruthful in your personal history statement required by the Sheriff's Office, you will be disqualified and receive a NO CREDIT for the course.

If you have any question or concerns regarding your background, contact Dr. Schweizer, the law enforcement internship coordinator, who is also a contractor for the Fresno County Sheriff's Office.

You should only submit your personal background data if you feel you qualify for the program. If you cannot and believe that your case reflects special circumstances (i.e. youthful, one time marijuana use, traffic tickets, etc.) then you should confer in person with Dr. Schweizer before completing this form. The information you submit on this form will not otherwise be shared with anyone else, except for the Fresno County Sheriff's Office.

(Exceptions would be a court order requiring the release of the information you submitted)

NOTE: If you are found to be dishonest in your assessment that you meet the conditions outlined, you will immediately be removed from further consideration for CRIM108.
