Catalog Description: Instruction in basic skills and techniques of badminton for singles, doubles, and mixed double play. Emphasis on basic skills development, rules, and strategy.

Purpose of the Course: This course is designed to provide basic motor skills development related to badminton stroke production and basic knowledge of badminton strategy and rules.

Course Goals and Objectives:

Goals: 
  1. Provide instruction and practice to motor skills development in badminton 
  2. Encourage student participation 
  3. Promote lifelong practice of badminton, and increase self esteem through exercise and social interaction
Objectives:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of badminton strategy, terminology, and rules 
  2. Describe, analyze and evaluate basic badminton strokes and footwork 
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of double, and single rules
  4. Perform basic footwork (split step, scissors kick, general movement) 
  5. Demonstrate skill mastery of, feeding a partner, serve, underhand lob, net shot, drive, clear and drop shot.
Course content: 
  1. Terminology, rules of singles and doubles, scoring
  2. Pronation/supination as the basic skills in badminton 
  3. Feeding a partner, grip, net shots, corresponding footwork, safety at the net 
  4. Underhand clear from the net, and corresponding footwork 
  5. Singles strategy, doubles strategy 
  6. Drive/return of smash, and corresponding footwork 
  7. Overhead clear and corresponding footwork, Scissors kick 
  8. Overhead drop shot and corresponding footwork

90- 100 = A
80 – 89 = B
70 – 79 = C
60 – 69 = D
Less than 60 = F
Attendance
0-2 absence = 50
3 absences = 40
4 absences = 30
5 absences = 20
ETC.

 

Skill acquisition: At the end of the semester the students will be videotape or analyze in written form and five stroke or strategy component will be evaluate.

Attendance:Students who arrive to class after attendance is taken are responsible to notify the instructor at the end of class to update the record. Students are responsible for any class work missed including handouts. Only a total of 2 (three) classes can be made up. Classes can be made up in one of the instructor other racquet class (racquetball, tennis or another activity class with prior approval from the instructor). Note: Absences the day before or the day after a holiday can't be made up.

Participation: A maximum of 2 points will be awarded during each class for participation. Participation includes proper attire (gym shoes, gym clothes, being on time, etc.), being on time, setting up equipment, putting away equipment. Students are also expected to participate in the semester long double elimination tournament.

Disruptive Classroom Behavior: Each student is expected to conduct himself or herself in a professional manner showing the utmost courtesy and respect to the instructor and other students in the class. The goal is to create a community of learners in a positive, insult-free zone. A student who is unable to conduct himself or herself in a courteous and respectful manner will be asked to remove himself or herself from the classroom.

Safety: Come to class physically and mentally prepared. Be aware of potential hazards associated with participation in this course. Wear appropriate attire, footwear, and approved personal protective equipment. Should an injury occur, please let the instructor know immediately
