Math 151 Home Page and Selected Course Materials

This is the home page for Math 151, Fall 2004. All policies and procedures for the course are outlined in the syllabus. Be sure to read it thoroughly and refer to it often throughout the course. NOTE: If updates to the syllabus become necessary, I will announce any changes in class. These changes override any information contained in the above syllabus. You are responsible for obtaining the most up-to-date information.

Here you will also find downloadable course documents, such as handouts, homework lists, exams, and exam solutions as they become available. Some of these documents are in ".pdf" format. In order to view and print them, you will need a pdf viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader. Most Fresno State computers have it. To get a free copy, click here. If you are having difficulty downloading the documents, it sometimes helps to save the files to disk and then open them in your .pdf reader rather than having the browser open them for you. Please let me know if you have any trouble reading them.

News and Notes -- Last update 12/9 [Skip to new postings]

  • 8/19: The secret quote for the course is, "Imitation does not imply understanding."
  • 8/20: The various web pages for this course should now be up and running. If you find any errors or links not working, please let me know.
  • 8/31: Due to unavoidable schedule conflicts I will be changing my Thursday office hours. The office hours for this Thursday remain 4:30-6:00pm. Effective Thursday, September 9 they will be 1:30-2:45. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
  • 9/9: This week's homework solutions are available above. Sorry for the delay! The homework list has been updated with the deadlines so far.
  • 9/16 (1): A reminder that there will be a QUIZ on Wednesday, September 22 during the last 20 minutes of class. The quiz will cover Chapters 1 and 2 of the text (1.1 through 2.3) and will be 3 short questions. One of the questions will ask you to state a definition or theorem, one will be a computation, and one will be a proof. The proof will be very straight-forward if you've done the homework and remember the important results. The purpose of the quiz is to get you warmed up and ready for the first MIDTERM (see below). You will have 20 minutes to do the quiz.
  • 9/16 (2): We will have our first MIDTERM in class on Friday, October 1. You will have the entire class to do the midterm. The midterm will cover sections 1.1 through 3.1 of the text. Note that although there is no homework due the week of the midterm, some material from homework due the following week (see homework list) will be on the exam. So it would greatly benefit you to do some of the problems from section 3.1 early!
  • 9/24 (1): The solutions to this week's quiz are available above. Based on the results, it appears that many of you have a long way to go to get ready for the midterm next Friday. If you scored 12 (the median) or less on the quiz, I highly recommend that you come my office hours on Monday to discuss your plans for passing the midterm and to clear up any conceptual difficulties you are still having.
  • 9/24 (2): My computer ate my disk with the HW 4 solutions on it, so I will have to recover the file from my laptop. I will post them as soon as I can. Sorry for the inconvenience.
  • 9/26: The homework solutions have arrived! Sorry for the delay. Good luck studying for the midterm!
  • 9/27: The authors of our textbook have a free study guide online with practice problems and solutions! Thanks to Tom for finding this resource.
  • 10/1: There was an error in the quiz solutions on #3(b). It has now been fixed. Thanks to Jacob for pointing this out.
  • 10/11: The homework list has been updated with current deadlines.
  • 10/16: As announced in class my Thursday office hours will be reverting to their old time of 4:30-6:00pm effective this Thursday, October 21.
  • 10/30 (1): As mentioned in class we are having our second QUIZ on Wednesday, November 3 during the last 20 minutes of class. The quiz will cover Chapter 3 of the text (3.1 through 3.8) and will be 3 short questions. One of the questions will ask you to state a definition or theorem, one will be a computation, and one will be a proof. The proof will be very straight-forward if you've done the homework and remember the important results. The purpose of the quiz is to get you warmed up and ready for the second MIDTERM (see below). You will have 20 minutes to do the quiz.
  • 10/30 (2): We will have our second MIDTERM in class on Friday, November 12. You will have the entire class to do the midterm. The midterm will cover sections 3.1 through 4.1 of the text. Note that although there is no homework due the week of the midterm, some material from homework due the following week (see homework list) will be on the exam. So it would greatly benefit you to do some of the problems from section 4.1 early!
  • 10/30 (3): Speaking of homework, the homework list has been updated with the deadlines for the rest of the term. Alas, we will not have time for Chapter 6. I know your hearts are breaking. :-)
  • 11/9: The solutions to the last two homeworks (sections 3.7 and 3.8), and to the last quiz, are now available above. Please let me know if you have any questions. Good luck on the midterm!
  • 11/17: The solutions to Midterm II are now available above.
  • 11/28 (1): Don't forget that we are having our third and final quiz on the last day of class, Wednesday, December 8. It will cover the first three sections in each of chapters 4 and 5. This is your warm-up for the FINAL EXAM (see below).
  • 11/28 (2): My regular office hours will end after the last day of class. Here is when I will be available instead:
    • Consultation hours: Friday, December 10, 9:15-10:20 am, in S 139 (our regular classroom)
    • Finals week office hours: Monday, December 13, 10:00 am-12:00 noon in PB 343 (my office)
    • If you cannot make any of those times, please feel free to make an appointment. I want everyone to do well on the final!
  • 11/28 (3): The FINAL EXAM will be on Wednesday, December 15, 8:45-10:45am. The final exam is comprehensive but will focus on chapters 4 and 5 (approximately half the points will be based on rings and fields). It is not too early to begin reviewing for the final!
  • 11/28 (4): You will be required to show your photo ID sometime before or at the final exam. This is to help ensure that nobody else is taking the class for you. Acceptable ID includes your Fresno State ID card, a driver's license, or a passport. Your exam will not be graded until I have accepted your ID. Please present your ID to me in person as soon as possible, so that you don't have to worry about it the day of the final.
  • 12/5: Thanks to Kelli for pointing out an error in the solutions to Midterm I (the bonus problem, which is very similar to one of this week's homework problems -- section 5.2 #15). The midterm solutions have now been fixed and can be downloaded above.
  • New! 12/9: The solutions to the last homework and the quiz are now available above. Good luck studying for the final! A reminder that I will need to see your photo ID at or before the final (see 11/28 (4), above).
