Speech 12 – Interpretation
Children’s Literature Presentation
Time Limit: 4-6 minutes
Story choices will be due to me on September 16th.
Notebook Requirements:
1. Introduction (this should include the author or authors used, the name of the story/stories and any background information the audience may need in order to follow the story)
2. Full script – this may seem crazy but I need the complete story – feel free to copy it from the book if necessary – or re-type the story.
3. Conclusion (this should include some type of appropriate ending such as a moral to the story, or an anecdotal reason for choosing the piece)
4. Brief write up on the author or authors used along with a reason why you selected these particular pieces. This shouldn’t be more than one page. (This should include the proper citation for the work)
Reflection papers will be due one week after your performance. They should be 2-3 pages in length – refer to the reflection paper guidelines for more information.
Overview of Requirements: This assignment is similar to that of your personal storytelling however this performance must be from a published source. Please select a story to read with feeling and character to the class. You will be graded on things like your characterization (voices, body, face, etc.), focus (concentration), time (you have a strict limit on this one), and story choice (remember the categories of universality, suggestion, and individuality?), so you will want to choose your story early so you can think about it, evaluate it, and practice it.
When
selecting you story, keep your time limit in mind; feel free to cut out sections
or add from another story to hit your time limit. If you choose to cut out part
of the story make sure the audience will still be able to follow the story. Ways
to do this include covering some background information in the introduction or
having a brief transition section where you break the fourth wall and tell the
audience what is happening. If you do this please include it in your notebook.
If you decide to add you are welcome to combine different stories that revolve
around a similar theme.
Once
you have selected your story and have thought about how you will interpret it,
you need to compose an introduction and a conclusion. (See above for details)
The introduction should be MEMORIZED. Scripts and conclusions maybe read but
introductions must be memorized this time.
Don’t
forget to practice, practice, practice – make sure you time yourself!!
Remember this is CHILDREN’S LITERATURE so make it fun !!
