Ceremonial Speech
The
purpose of this assignment is two –fold first it is to introduce students to
another form of public speaking and secondly it is to give students an
opportunity to express gratitude to their dyad. More often than any other speech
format we are called upon to present speeches of celebration. Generally these
speeches are lighthearted. Special occasion speeches include (but are not
limited to) speeches of introduction, speeches of acceptance, award
presentations, roasts and toasts, eulogies and other speeches of tribute,
after-dinner speeches, and speeches of inspiration.
This semester you were assigned a dyad. For this ceremonial speech you will
honor and give an award to your dyad.
Procedures:
-
Use an introduction that captures the attention of the
audience, has a clear thesis and a preview of main points. (2 will suffice)
-
Use an extemporaneous speaking style. (you may have note
cards or a key word outline)
-
Speeches are to be 2 minutes in length. (Practice so you
know you will be on time!!)
-
Outlines are required for this speech. Outline format should
be followed.
-
Since you are giving your dyad an award, the award will be
your visual aid. You must make the award. The award should not cost more
than three dollars. The idea is that it is hand made by you especially for
them. Think of your interaction with your dyad – what type of award would be
appropriate.
-
Keep the award a secret! Do not tell them what they will be
awarded or what you will say about them during your speech.
