Informative Group Speech Assignment

The objective of this assignment is to provide students with experience in informative speaking.  Each presentation should be audience adapted, organized, extemporaneous and informative.  Using the forms of support discussed in the text, develop and construct a speech of description, demonstration, or explanation.

I.                 Speech of Description:  This speech should provide a “clear picture” of your subject. Describing the Statue of Liberty is an example of this type of speech.

II.               Speech of Demonstration: This speech should help the listener learn a new skill, behavior, or technique. Showing students how to create a web site is an example of this type of speech. (See my web page for a list of ideas on How To speeches)

III.             Speech of Explanation:  This speech offers information about topics that are abstract and difficult to understand. Explaining the effects of global warming is an example of this type of speech.

Procedures:

I.                Select one of the above and develop a group presentation, each member of the group should speak for 5-7 minutes. Your group will have the entire class period to present.

II.              The speech should be carefully organized and contain a thesis statement.

III.             The use of visual aids is required.

IV.            Each member should use an extemporaneous speaking style.

V.              Groups must submit a group outline and individual outlines that are typed, and in full sentence format. These outlines are due one class date prior to the first assigned speech. (We will discuss the outline format in class including how to merge individual outlines into a group outline)

VI.            Groups must also submit a group “Reference” page. They should utilize an APA style format. (4 to 5 citations are mandated per person, and due the day your group submits their outline)
