Persuasive Outline
I. Introduction
1. Ask a couple people in the audience what they would feel like if they earned
A’s in the class and couldn’t receive those grades because they were promised
to someone else.
2. To judge the placement or promotion of an individual based on the color of
their skin or their ethnic background is wrong and that is why affirmative
action is not “affirmative” at all.
3. I will tell the class why affirmative action is wrong, talk about affirmative
action denying people jobs and placement in schools, and discuss some
victories against affirmative action.
4. Everyone has been judged on race or gender at some point in their lives and
someday, affirmative action may be the reason they do or do not get a job.
II. Body
1. Affirmative action goes against morals and laws.
a. Civil rights wanted to make everyone equal and affirmative action
does not do that.
b. Affirmative action is a direct violation of the 14th amendment.
c. Reverse discrimination can be the result of affirmative action.
2. Some battles against affirmative action have been won.
a. Regents of University of California vs. Bakke court case is a landmark
court case against affirmative action.
b. Adarand Constructors Inc. vs. Pena is another victory in the court
system against affirmative action.
3. There are many cases of qualified individuals getting passed up for what they
should achieve because of affirmative action.
a. Police promotions are affected by affirmative action.
b. Law school admissions are affected by affirmative action.
c. Federal construction jobs are even affected by affirmative action.
III. Conclusion
1. Affirmative action is another way to stereotype people based on race. Taking
race into account on anything only perpetuates the idea of racism in America.
2. Richard Pryor put this same type of feeling into one of his acts: “It’s hard
enough to be a human being in this world without throwing in the concept of
different races.”
