Math 100. Exploring Mathematics.

Homework 1.

Problem 1.

There are goats and peacocks at a farm. Together they have 54 heads and 130 legs. How many of the animals are goats and how many are peacocks?

Problem 2.

The idea of working backwards can be intoduced at an early age, however, the cookie jar problem on page 10 is too long and overwhelming for most young students. In addition, even if they know what a third and a fourth are, they are not yet proficient at working with fractions. Make up a simplier (e.g. shorter, and/or with easier fractions) version of the cookie jar problem. For example, one that could be given to students in grades K-2. Show your solution to your version of the problem.
