TEXTBOOK: Single Variable Calculus and Early Transcendantals, fourth edition, by James Stewart.
CONTENT: MTH 142 begins with applications of differentiation and then covers the integral calculus. Topics covered include optimization, Newton's Method, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, and Techniques of Integration. Applications such as calculating areas and volumes, averages, arc length and surface areas, work, and centers of mass will be studied.
A "Catalog Description" is available at http://www.math.rochester.edu:8080/courses/catalog/mth142.html
Prerequisites: MTH141 or MTH161

HOMEWORK: Homework comes in two forms.
One form consists of WeBWorK problems. WeBWorK problems are
done over the web (http://webwork.math.rochester.edu/mth142) and
provide instant feedback as to whether you have done a problem correctly or not. When you
have done a WeBWorK problem correctly, that fact is immediately recorded. WeBWorK problems are
individualized for each student, so you may work together on the general method for solving
problems. However, you are expected to do your own assignment. WeBWorK problems count about
30% of the total grade. More information on WeBWorK is provided on a separate handout and at
http://webwork.math.rochester.edu/docs/docs/studentintro.html . WebWork assignments will
be due Wednesday 5:00 am of each week. Assignment 1 is due September
20. There is assignment 0 which doesn't count toward your
grade. It is for your practice only. The list of webwork assignments is on
http://www.math.rochester.edu/courses/current/MTH142/webassign.html
The other form of homework consists of supplementary problems
that are listed on the website http://www.math.rochester.edu/courses/current/MTH142/homework.html. These
problems do not contribute directly to your total grade, but they will be discussed in recitation and
similar problems may very well appear on quizzes and exams. You may not have enough time to do all the
supplementary problems. Make sure you try at least some from each section.
It is important to do both the WeBWorK and supplementary
problems.
RECITATIONS: There will be a weekly recitation/workshop where homework will be discussed and sometimes a short quiz based on the homework will be given. Recitations start the week of September 11. Sign up for a recitation on sheets posted on the second floor of Hylan near the elevators. Attendance is compulsory in the sense that attendance at one recitation is worth 5 points toward your total grade, up to a maximum of 50 points. If a quiz is given, the quiz will be worth 4 points and attendance 1 point.
TA | Day | Time | Location |
Ozge Uluckan | T | 11:05-11:55 | Hylan 1106A |
Chris Gibson | T | 12:30-1:20 | Hutchison 339 |
Patricia Grabenstetter | R | 10:30-10:50 | Hutchison 339 |
ATTENDANCE: Attendance at lectures is compulsory in the sense that 5 short quizzes will be given with no announcements in advance. Each quiz will be worth 4 points and attendance 1 point.
GRADING:
Midterm Exams: 100 points each for a total of 200 points.
WebWork Problems: 200 points
Final Exam: Part I: 100 points; Part II: 100 points.
Recitations: 50 points
Class quizes: 25 points
The final exam will consist of two parts: Part I will be cumulative covering the material
on the midterm exams and Part II will be based on material not covered on the midterm
exams. If your score on Part I is higher than your score on one of the midterm exams, then
your score on Part I will replace your lowest midterm exam score (one replacement
only). There will be no make-up exams. If necessary, Part I of the Final Exam will be
used to replace a missed exam. It cannot be used to replace any other grade. If your score on Part I is
lower than your midterm exam scores, then your score on Part I will be omitted.
Thus the maximum possible score is 575.
EXTRA HELP: There are many sources for extra help and we strongly encourage you to take advantage of them. In addition to studying with your classmates, you should take advantage of your recitation section, the instructor's office hours listed below, the Math Study Hall in Hylan 1103 on Tuesdays and Thursdays 1 pm - 6 pm and study groups organized by Learning Assistance Services (Lattimore 107 or call 5-9049). If you have any difficulties, please seek help immediately.
