Service-Learning Projects in Marketing

Target Market: Organizations that need short term assistance with marketing related activities.
Hours required: 15 as an individual or as part of a team (e.g. a team of 4 are committed to a total of 60 hours),
Time Frame for Completing Service: Sept 15 to November 30 (fall semester), February 15 to April 30 (spring semester)
Nature of Service Provided: Assignment must involve student in some aspect of marketing such as helping with fund raisers (event planning, working the day of the event), mini research projects, updating educational materials, working at "informational" events, developing new informational materials, or helping with awareness building campaigns. Students should not be used exclusively for solicitation of funds or donations.
Primary Type of Student: Junior and senior business students enrolled in the principles of marketing course from a variety of majors including marketing, management, information systems, finance, and accounting.
Fees/Cost: None, except for supplies, if needed.
Number of Students Available: Approximately 225 each semester.
How and When to Apply for Assistance: Complete a team/individual request form describing the activity or project and fax to contact person.  Requests should be submitted by August 15 for the fall semester and January 10 for the spring semester.

Marketing Plan Projects

Target Market: Nonprofit organizations who need assistance with developing or implementing some aspect of a marketing plan.
Hours required: Since this activity is project based, the actual number of actual hours will vary.
Time Frame for Completing Service: Approximately 6-7 weeks. Actual work on the projects begins around October 1 in the fall and March 1 in the spring.
Nature of Service Provided: Students work in teams of 3-5 to create a deliverable output relating to some aspect of the organization’s marketing plan. This could include, but is not restricted to, marketing research, promotional planning, analysis of services/products, analysis of how services/products are made available (e.g. distribution), or competitive analysis.
Primary Type of Student: Senior marketing major. This is the capstone class in marketing.
Fees/Cost: None, except for supplies, if needed.
Number of Students Available: 3-4 teams each semester. Usually more in spring semester.
How and When to Apply for Assistance: A specific description of what is needed should be provided to the contact person.  Projects are set up at the beginning of the semester. Requests should be made by August 15 for the fall semester and January 15 for the spring semester.

Nonprofit Marketing Projects – Independent Study

Target Market: Nonprofit organizations that need short term help working on a marketing related project.
Hours required: 35
Time Frame for Completing Service: September 1-November 30 and February 1-April 30.
Nature of Service Provided: Students can provide assistance with any aspect of marketing except the direct solicitation of funds.
Primary Type of Student: Junior or senior business major. Student could be majoring in any business discipline.

3-4 per semester
How and When to Apply for Assistance:
Specific activities that student will be involved with will need to be provided to contact person. Requests should be made by August 15 or January 15.

Services Marketing Projects

Target Market: Not-for-profit organizations providing specific services to one or more market segments requiring assistance with marketing planning and implementation.
Hours required: 15 required, most students complete at least 20.
Time Frame for Completing Service: Fall semester (August 30 – December 10)
Nature of Service Provided: Students work individually to provide a marketing plan or project plan for the organization, taking into consideration its budget and personnel constraints, as well as the ability to implement any proposal.
Primary Type of Student: Junior and senior marketing majors and mass communications majors.
Fees/Cost: None
Number of Students Available: Approximately 20 (Fall semester only)
How and When to Apply for Assistance: Contact professor with a description of what is needed. Organizations should make contact 3-4 weeks before the beginning of the fall semester (e.g. August 1- 15).
