Stonehenge and Avebury

Stonehenge, with the heel stone at right

Stonehenge during a rare sunny moment. Since 1978, the crowds have been kept at bay by the fence.

The expedition enters Avebury. The avenue of standing stones is two miles long.

Part of one of the stone circles at Avebury

In the 7th Century A.D., a village sprung up in the circles at Avebury. Notice how the houses are made of material quite similar to the standing stones...

The largest stones at Avebury weigh over 60 tons.
