Math 71/90, Fall 2004 Frequently Asked Questions

Q. My major requires Math 75. Is there going to be any problem getting credit for Math 75 if I take this course?

A. No problem! As long as you pass Math 71/90 with a C or better, you will be allowed to continue in the second semester, which will show up on your transcript as Math 75. The grade you receive in that class will be your grade for Math 75.

Q. I've never heard of Math 71/90. Has this course been offered before?

A. This is the second year of a pilot program to introduce the one-year course. Last year 23 students completed the course with great success, and this year we are expanding to 60 students.

Q. Why do I need two permission numbers to add this course?

A. The fall semester of this course is still in the pilot stage and has no official catalogue description. In order for you to get the 4 college credits you deserve for the fall, you must enroll in Math 71 (3 credits) and Math 90 (1 credit). Math 71 was a similar course to Math 71/90 that is no longer being offered, though it is still in the catalogue and therefore a valid course on your transcript. Math 90 is designated as "independent study."

Q. Why not just have 4 credits of Math 90 instead? Or Math 71?

A. Math 71 is in the catalogue as a 3-credit course, and that cannot be changed. Additionally, University rules state that no student may take more than 3 credits of independent study per semester in any one department. Therefore we have split the credit between the two courses, and that is why it is called Math 71/90. The math department is in the process of getting this two-semester course into the catalogue for next year, as Math 75A (first semester) and Math 75B (second semester).

Q. If I can't make the first class meeting, can I still enroll?

A. No. The first step to success in calculus, or any class, is to come to class. This course is for serious students only. If you have an acute illness or other serious or compelling reason why you cannot come to the first class meeting, you must e-mail me no later than Friday, August 27 at noon to make arrangements. I will reply to your email after 4pm if there is still space in the class after the first meeting.

Q. If I fail the first semester, what happens?

A. Since it is still a pilot course, Math 71/90 will not be repeated this spring. Your options are to retake Math 71/90 next fall (Fall 2005) or to try your luck at the regular Math 75 in the spring.

Q. I'm pretty sure Math 71/90 is for me. Should I go ahead and drop my Math 75 class?

A. Space in Math 71/90 is limited. You should not drop Math 75 until you receive permission numbers for Math 71/90, unless you are willing to end up with neither class.

Q. I've already bought my books for Math 75. Does Math 71/90 use the same texts?

A. Yes. We will be using Stewart's Calculus, 5th edition. In addition we will have a supplemental text, called A Companion to Calculus by Ebersole et al., which should be available in the bookstore. This is a fairly inexpensive, soft-cover book that will help us get through the more difficult larger book.

We will not be using Mathematica in the fall, but we will in the spring. So if you have already bought A Mathematica Mystery Tour by Cusick, you should hang onto it.
