Math 71/90 Home Page and Selected Course Materials

This is the home page for Math 71/90, Fall 2004. All policies and procedures for the course are outlined in the syllabus and in the Frequently Asked Questions. Be sure to read them thoroughly and refer to them often throughout the course. NOTE: If updates to the syllabus become necessary, I will announce any changes in class. These changes override any information contained in the above syllabus. You are responsible for obtaining the most up-to-date information.
Here you will also find downloadable course documents, such as handouts, worksheets, homework lists, exams, and exam solutions as they become available. Some of these documents are in ".pdf" format. In order to view and print them, you will need a pdf viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader. Most Fresno State computers have it. To get a free copy, click here. If you are having difficulty downloading the documents, it sometimes helps to save the files to disk and then open them in your .pdf reader rather than having the browser open them for you. Please let me know if you have any trouble reading them.

News and Notes -- Last update 12/10 [Skip to new postings]

  • Old news from August (8/19 - 8/31)
  • Old news from September (9/1 - 9/30)
  • Old news from October (10/1 - 10/31)
  • 11/1: This Friday's quiz will cover Section 7-C of Ebersole, plus Section 3.3 of Stewart. You should know how to
    • Find the derivative of a function using the correct "shortcut" rules, including
      • Power Rule
      • Constant Multiple Rule
      • Sum and Difference Rule
      • Product Rule
      • Quotient Rule
    • Simplify a derivative using techniques such as factoring and cancelling
    • Given a function f(x), find the values of x where the tangent line is horizontal by taking the derivative, setting it equal to 0, and solving for x
  • 11/6 (1): The homework list has been updated through Wednesday, November 17.
  • 11/6 (2): This Friday's quiz will cover Sections 8-A through 8-C of Ebersole, plus Section 3.4 of Stewart. You should know how to
    • Solve word problems involving distance vs. velocity
    • Give the radian measures of angles in standard position
    • Calculate trig functions based on either the unit circle or the right triangle definition
    • Know the trig functions for all the special angles discussed in class (those with denominator 2, 3, 4, or 6)
    • Given the value of a trigonometric function for an angle and the quadrant of the angle, find all six trig functions on that angle. For example, "Suppose cos(θ) = -5/9 and θ is in Quadrant III. Find sin(θ), tan(θ), sec(θ), csc(θ), and cot(θ)."
  • 11/13 (1): The homework list has been updated through the end of the term. Please note that there is a LOT of homework due the week after Thanksgiving, so you are urged to work on it as much as possible before and/or during the break.
  • 11/13 (2): Class is NOT cancelled the Monday of Thanksgiving week. To encourage you to come to class that day, in addition to the 3 points you will get for your attendance grade, there will also be a BONUS assignment given in class on that day. So please do not start your Thanksgiving holiday early!
  • 11/13 (3): We are having our last quiz on Friday! It will cover Sections 8-D and 8-E of Ebersole, plus Sections 3.5 and 3.6 of Stewart. You should know how to
    • Give the domain and range of sin x, cos x, and tan x
    • Find the derivatives of sin x, cos x, and tan x
    • Given a trigonometric function of the form A cos(B(x - C)) or A sin(B(x - C)), recognize how the values of A, B, and C affect the amplitude, period, and horizontal shift of a graph
    • Sketch the graph of a trigonometric function of the form A cos(B(x - C)) or A sin(B(x - C))
    • Find the derivative of a composition of functions using the chain rule, such as f(t) = sin(t ³)
  • 11/15: Ooops! When I made the homework deadlines a couple days ago, I forgot that we are having a MIDTERM on Friday, December 3. Therefore there will be no HW due on that day. The homework list has been updated to reflect the new deadlines. Of course, this means more homework due on the following Wednesday, which is the last day of class! Please plan ahead for this end-of-term load.
  • 11/22: We are having our third and last MIDTERM on Friday, December 3. You will have the entire 50 minutes to complete your test. It will cover Chapters 8 through 10 of Ebersole plus Sections 3.4 through 3.8 of Stewart. There is a practice exam available above (solutions will be posted soon). It is not too early to start studying for the exam! Please see the tips I gave for Midterm I for guidance.
  • 11/23 (1): Two people left calculators in class today! If you lost yours, I might have it. Please let me know if so, and describe your calculator. Have a great Thanksgiving!
  • 11/23 (2): The solutions to the practice midterm are now posted above. In order to maximize your benefit, try to do as many of the problems as you can on your own, before you look at the solutions.
  • 11/28 (1): The bonus assignment given in class on Monday, with solutions, is available above.
  • 11/28 (2): My regular office hours will end after the last day of class. Here is when I will be available instead:
    • Consultation hours: Friday, December 10, 1:00-3:00 pm, in S 139 (our regular classroom)
    • Finals week office hours: Monday, December 13, 10:00 am-12:00 noon in PB 343 (my office)
    • If you cannot make any of those times, please feel free to make an appointment. I want everyone to do well on the final!
  • 11/28 (3) (corrected 12/1): The FINAL EXAM will be held in our regular classroom on Monday, December 13, at the following times:
    • 1:15-3:15 (for the 1:00 section)
    • 3:30-5:30 (for the 2:30/2:00 section)
If you believe you have a conflict with your designated time, contact me immediately. Please note that it is strictly against University policy for me to give final exams early for any reason.

The final exam is comprehensive. It will cover Chapters 2-11 of Ebersole and Chapters 1-3 of Stewart (the sections we covered). It is not too early to begin reviewing for the final!

  • 12/7 (1): There is a practice final exam available above. This is the exact final exam I gave last year, so you should not expect it to be any easier or shorter than this! You may expect, however, minor changes in the format or wording of questions. For instance, I might have a True or False section or write different kinds of problems. The best way to prepare for the exam, as always, is to practice, practice, practice: complete the practice final and as many odd-numbered problems in the texts as you can under exam conditions (no notes, no calculator). Good luck!
  • 12/7 (2): The solutions to Practice Midterm III have been corrected (there was an error in Work and Answer #2) and are available above. I am working on the solutions to Midterm III and the Practice Final and will try to have them available as soon as possible. Keep checking back!
  • 12/7 (3): The solutions to Midterm III are now available above.
  • New! 12/10: The solutions to the practice final are now available above. Good luck on the final! I am rooting for all of you!
