Math 76 Home Page and Selected Course Materials
Instructor: Dr. Katherine Kelm
This is the home page for Math 76, spring 2007. Click here to go to the syllabus. NOTE: If updates to the syllabus become necessary, I will announce any changes in class. These changes override any information contained in the above syllabus. You are responsible for obtaining the most up-to-date information.
Here you will also find downloadable course documents, such as handouts, worksheets, homework lists, exams, and exam solutions as they become available. Some of these documents are in ".pdf" format. In order to view and print them, you will need a pdf viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader. Most Fresno State computers have it. To get a free copy, click here. If you are having difficulty downloading the documents, it sometimes helps to save the files to disk and then open them in your .pdf reader rather than having the browser open them for you. Please let me know if you have any trouble reading them.

    1. The Homework List has been updated with current deadlines, including WeBWorK.
    2. It is not too early to begin thinking about our first MIDTERM, which is coming up in two weeks (February 16). It will cover sections 6.1 through 7.1 of the text. Next week I will prepare some practice problems for the test, but it is a good idea to start reviewing now by doing some or all of the Warmup/Study/Enrichment problems from the Homework List.

    1. The Homework List has been updated with current deadlines, including WeBWorK. Sorry about the delay in getting HW7-1 posted to WeBWorK; it has now been fixed.
    2. A collection of practice problems for next week's midterm is now available above (under the red Exams and Practice Exams heading). Solutions will be available soon. You are urged to complete them under test conditions as much as possible (no notes, no calculator, no interruptions) in order to give yourself a good "dress rehearsal."
    3. Quiz solutions for the first three quizzes should be available above soon. Watch this space!
  • 2/12
    1. The solutions to the practice problems are now available above. It is a good idea to complete the practice problems to the best of your ability first, before looking at the solutions. Then check your answers and go over anything you missed or did not know how to do. Please do this as soon as possible so you have a chance to practice more and to get help from me and/or your peers well before the exam.
    2. A reminder that our problem session this week will be longer to give us extra time to go over problems before the test. It will be from 4:00-5:30pm in PB 390. It will be beneficial to you and to everyone else if you have thoroughly gone over the solutions to the practice problems before this session (see above). I will be happy to answer any questions that are asked; however, we will have time for many more questions if everyone is asking questions like, "In your solutions, on #3, I get all the steps except this part...", rather than, "I didn't get #3. No, I haven't tried to read your solutions."
    3. We have gone over a lot of difficult material in this course so far. You have all worked very hard and learned a lot. I feel that with continued study and practice everyone in our class is capable of doing well on this exam. I will be rooting for all of you! Good luck!

    1. Solutions to the first three quizzes are now available above.
    2. When setting deadlines for the homework, I forgot about Monday's holiday. So section 7.4 will not be due next week (nor will it be on next week's quiz). See the Homework List for details.

    1. The Homework List has been updated with current deadlines, including WeBWorK.
    2. Due to confusion about deadlines resulting from my failure to update the homework list last week, an extension has been granted for WeBWorK assignment HW7-8. It is now due next week. Please see the Homework List for details.
    3. The quiz next week will be on sections 7.8, 8.1, and 8.2 commensurate with the homework for next week.

    4. Special Note!! WeBWorK is designed to begin Daylight Savings Time in April. So for the next three weeks, the system will say that the assignments are due at 10:30pm PST, which translates to 11:30pm PDT. This means that the assignments are due at the NEW 11:30 time. Please contact me if you have any questions about when the assignments are due.

    1. AAAACK! I've been saying section 10.3 was cut, when I meant section 10.4! Section 10.3 is on polar coordinates and is definitely in the course! I apologize profusely for the confusion. Please see the Homework List for details.

    6. The week after our midterm is a short week, as Friday, March 30 is a holiday. Consequently, all homework for that week will be due on Wednesday, March 28. There will be no quiz that week. As the holiday is followed immediately by Spring Break, there will be no late homework accepted. Thank you for your understanding.

    2. There were a couple bad spots on our recent midterm, questions almost everyone missed. I will also hand out the rules in class.

    1. The Homework List has been updated. The due dates for the rest of the term are now set. In particular, the last two sections of the paper homework will be due on Wednesday, May 2. Please see the homework list for details. Late homework will be accepted through Monday, May 7 at 4:00pm for half credit.
    2. The Mathematica assignments for the term have been cancelled. The homework grade for this course will be based only on WeBWorK and paper homework assignments. Please see me if you have any questions.
    3. Our third and final MIDTERM will be on Friday, May 4. It will cover chapter 11 of the text (through section 11.11). Watch for a set of practice problems coming soon. It is not too early to begin reviewing on your own -- please do lots of odd-numbered problems from the text, especially those from section 11.7.
    4. In order to ensure the academic integrity of this course, I will be checking your student ID at or before the final exam. Please bring it to class or office hours before the final exam so you do not have to worry about it on the day. If you decide to skip the final exam, you will still need to bring your ID to me before you start your summer vacation! Your grade for this course will not be processed until I have verified your ID. The only exception will be if you earn an F for the course. Thank you for your cooperation.
    5. Don't forget that the 5th annual Integration Bee is this Thursday! (April 26, 7:00pm in S2 109.) In order to encourage more participation, I have increased the bonus points for the event as follows:
      • Attendance at the Bee (non-competitor): 5 points
      • Competing in the Bee: 10 points
      • Placing first, second, or third in the Bee: 15 points
Please come and be part of the drama! It is always a fun event.

    1. There is a collection of practice problems for the final exam available above. As usual, you are urged to complete the problems under test conditions as much as possible. 2. Our final exam will be on Monday, May 14 from 11:00am to 1:00pm in our regular classroom (S2 206).
